This week in Early Childhood Music, we were all about Easter. We sang and danced to Easter themed songs.  At Holy Child we are blessed to be able to share our faith and the children had fun learning some Easter worship songs. 

The Nursery 2 class had a great time learning to dance the Bunny Hop. You can check out their dancing feet here.

Our Nursery 2 and Nursery 3 classes love the Ho Ho Ho Hosanna song, as you can see in this video here.

The Nursery 2 & 3 children also enjoyed learning the chant Warm, Brown Egg. You can see the Nursery 3 class reciting it here.

The Kindergarten and Pre-K  enjoyed learning the song Signs of New Life (an oldie but goodie) from the Hi God series. Click here to view the video of  the children singing this joyful Easter hymn.

Week of March 15

This week there has been much excitement around St. Patrick’s Day in the HCA Early Childhood.  We even had a leprechaun pay us a visit and cause quite a stir! In music class we have been celebrating St. Patrick's Day with Irish music and dance. 

Our Nursery 2 class enjoyed a play along to Blue St. Pat, an Irish inspired blues song. You can see them playing along in this video here .

The children also learned a little bit about Irish dance and viewed a short video featuring Irish dancers in Riverdance .  Our Pre-K was inspired to try a few dance steps of their own. Check out their fancy feet here.

Our Nursery 3 students were very excited to be introduced to the rhythm sticks.  They are learning to play them properly, experimenting with different rhythms and having fun playing them.  To get in the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, they played along with the Irish song, Rin Tin Tinah and had a great time, as you can see in this video here. 

Our Pre-K students have been working on rhythm patterns and have been introduced to the concept of a rest in music.  I often say in music it's important to know when not to play as well as to know when to play.  With this Play and Stop song, the children are asked to stop playing and rest.  This requires listening and self control.  We also varied the tempo and they played right along.  They did a terrific job as you can see in this video here.

The Kindergarten is preparing to work on a composition project in which they will all have a part in composing an original song.   We have been working on reading and writing quarter notes, eighth note pairs and quarter note rests.  This week they were introduced to the PsP Bells app which features color coded pitched bells. This app will help them as they begin their composition.  They practiced playing color coded notation to match the bells.  We played "Name That Tune" as they played phrases from common children's songs and had to name the song after playing it.

In our early childhood music classes we use movement with music in many different ways.  Free movement encourages creative expression and helps develop a child’s coordination and sense of rhythm.  Guided movement with music can be used for a variety of purposes.  In the following video the Nursery 2 class is using different movements to differentiate the musical phrases of the song Ram Sam Sam.  You can view the video here.

Our Kindergarten class worked very hard this week preparing to lead the school community in their Lenten Prayer Service.  Hopefully you were able to join us for the live stream on Friday morning.  The children did a fabulous job leading us in prayer.  Their singing touched people’s hearts.  You can view the video of the entire Kindergarten Prayer Service including their song, Gift to You, here.
